싱가포르에서 할 수 있는 가장 즐거운 일 중 하나는 아름다운 싱가포르 강을 따라 걷는 것입니다. 특히 보트키와 클락키는 싱가포르 무역사에서 가장 중요한 장소입니다. 이곳에서 상인들은 선박에서 짐을 내리고, 향신료와 쌀, 커피, 고무, 주석과 다른 여러 가지 상품을 강둑으로 가져왔습니다. 이곳은 중국과 인도의 초기 이민자들이 일했던 곳으로, 싱가포르의 역사를 이해하기 위하여 매우 중요한 곳입니다.

Situated at the mouth of Singapore’s dragon, Marina Bay Sands stands at the confluence of a strong stream of prosperous energy. The resort faces the country’s financial district, which is considered a prosperous sign for Marina Bay Sands and the city. The infinity pool at the top of Marina Bay Sands is also representative of a lake at the top of a giant mountain (the three towers of the resort) and is considered to be in harmony with its surroundings.

The ArtScience Museum in front of Marina Bay Sands is considered an architectural master piece and had won local and international acclaim for its unique design and construction style. The architecture of the ArtScience Museum is reminiscent of a lotus flower, a symbol of enlightenment, growth, and good fortune.

The historical Cavenagh Bridge is a great spot to start your walking tour of The People of the Riverstatue sites, and experience a slice of early Singapore from perspectives of the people who might have lived, played and worked along the river. On the bridge's left side, you'll see the First Generation, a frozen-motion sculpture of five boys diving off to go for a swim in the river. This isn’t allowed any more – and highly unadvisable – but what shows how the Singapore River held so many meanings for different groups of people. It’s a reminder that, many years ago, children played alongside bumboats unloading their wares, and that it wouldn’t have been uncommon to hear the energetic, happy shouts of youth amidst bustling markets.

강변을 걷다보면 싱가포르 조각가 Chong Fah Cheong이 창작한  싱가포르의 권위 있는 상 Cultural Medallion을 수상한 예술 작품들을 만나실 수 있습니다. 이 공공 예술 작품들은 싱가포르의 역사를 보다 가까이에서 접하며, 당시 강변에서 생활하고, 일했던 사람들의 관점을 이해할 수 있는 훌륭한 방법입니다. 역사적인 카베나 브리지(Cavenagh Bridge) 왼쪽에는 작품 이민 1세대(First Generation)가 있습니다. 5명의 소년들이 강에서 수영을 하기 위해 다리로 뛰어내리는 동작을 묘사한 조각입니다. 이제는 강에서 수영을 할 수 없지만  이 작품은 싱가포르의 강이 많은 사람들에게 중요한 부분을 차지하며 다양한 의미를 선사한다는 것을 보여줍니다. 오래 전 물건을 내리는 분주한 행상 보트 주변 시장의 아이들의 활기차고 즐거운 외침을 상상할 수 있는 작품입니다.

작품 이민 1세대(First Generation) 오른쪽에는 또 다른 조각상, 체티에서 파이낸서까지(From Chettiars to Financers)가 있습니다. 이 조각상은 단순한 전통적 대부업자로부터 출발한 싱가포르 금융의 역사에 경의를 표하는 작품입니다. 체티(Chettiars)는 타밀 지역사회의 구성원이며 1820년대 다른 많은 이민자들과 함께 인도 체티나드에서 싱가포르에 왔습니다 많은 체티는 역사적으로 전통적인 대부업자였습니다. 그들은 싱가포르 강을 따라 여러 무역 상사 주변에서 성공적으로 대부 사업을 시작했습니다. 이제는 글로벌 금융 허브로 떠오른 싱가포르의 역사를 보여주는 흥미로운 작품입니다. 

 

싱가포르 역사

 

풀러튼 호텔(Fullerton Hotel, 구 중앙우체국) 건물의 정면을 향해 걸어가서 연작의 세 번째 조각, 강의 상인들(River Merchants)을 만나볼 수 있습니다. 싱가포르 초기의 상인 알렉산더 로리 존스톤(Alexander Laurie Johnston)의 모습과 닮은 사람이 상인들과 대화를 하고 있고, 중국인 짐꾼들은 조금 떨어진 곳에서 달구지에 짐을 싣고 있는 모습을 나타냅니다. 스코틀랜드 출신의 존스톤은 초기 싱가포르 비즈니스에서 핵심적인 인물이었고 상공회의소(Chamber of Commerce)의 창립 멤버였습니다.
